Salt Lake City Tabernacle Pew, c. 1867
Salt Lake City, Utah
The Tabernacle pews were originally grained (faux bois) in an oak pattern. Other documented refinishing dates included 1917 and 1962. We used optical microscopy to determine the number of finish layers. Then, tests were conducted to determine the best method of exposure for each layer. A combination of water-based removers was used, along with a conservator's heat gun and scalpel. Each layer responded differently to the methods, but the final outcome was the exposure of the first three layers of finish. Shipped back to Salt Lake City, the pew is now a museum piece demonstrative of generations of decorative painting.
